BT Berlin Transport:
Social Mobile Intranet
CBE DIGIDEN relies on “Social Mobile Intranet” for BT.
23.10.2024Well informed and connected
The facts
Fact 1: Berlin Transport is part of the Berlin Transport Company (BVG) group and employs around 1,800 people. The majority of them drive buses and subways through the capital day and night. A large workforce that is never in one place together.
Fact 2: BT already had a modern intranet at this time. CBE DIGIDEN had completely overhauled it for the company in 2012 and supplied a simple system for maintaining the content (a so-called content management system, or CMS for short). The best conditions for the targeted distribution of information to employees and digital dialogue with them.
Fact 3: However, the employees on the streets and rails of Berlin hardly used the intranet. This was mainly because they only had the opportunity to do so in their free time and especially at home.
Steps towards a solution
Step 1: CBE DIGIDEN is using “Social Mobile Intranet” for BT. All functions will now be geared to working on mobile devices. In keeping with the strategic principle of “Communicating with mobile people on the move”, Berlin Transport is distributing smartphones with free data plans to all employees.
Step 2: CBE DIGIDEN is also developing the BT News app. It has a so-called “push function”. Employees automatically receive individual notifications on their new smartphones as soon as news about the company is published on the intranet. Content can be rated with a “thumbs up / thumbs down”, very similar to the user experience in social networks.
Step 3: CBE DIGIDEN is revising the intranet in accordance with “responsive web design”: the page content, its structure and the navigation now automatically adapt to the screen of the mobile device. From now on, drivers can conveniently use the intranet during their breaks via smartphone. This means they are always informed quickly and comprehensively.
The results
Result 1: Traffic on the new intranet doubled just a short time after its introduction. Berlin Transport employees feel well informed and connected.
Result 2: Berlin Transport’s particularly user-oriented intranet concept received the German Prize for Online Communication 2014. In the “Intranet” category, the solution beat out competitors from companies such as Porsche and Bertelsmann. The German Prize for Online Communication has been honoring outstanding projects, campaigns and strategies for digital communication since 2011.
The advantages
The evolution of the intranet into its mobile version is not only worthwhile for companies whose employees work in very scattered locations or who only have access to the Internet in their free time. Mobile application for smartphone, tablet & Co. have become a fixed and natural part of the entire modern lifestyle. This also means that a company has easier access to its employees’ everyday lives by integrating a social mobile intranet. This increases the chance that company-relevant content will be consciously perceived. Employees are better informed and more committed. In addition to more effective collaboration and knowledge transfer, which is independent of location, this also leads to improved company communication.
The user-oriented intranet concept for BT Transport was also awarded the German Prize for Online Communication 2014 and the German Design Award 2016.
